When I was an elementary school kid, Scholastic News and Time for Kids did a decent job of addressing current affairs.  I appreciate Scholastic because they recruit students to be journalists, an honorable and tireless vocation.  How do you talk to your kids about current affairs, esp. the difficult ones?  Debt ceiling, starvation in Somalia, natural and human-made crises.

As the parent of an 8-yr-old, I understand that we adults have a balance between our excitement for a child’s energy of discovery and the anxiety we experience when the child takes physical risks.  Honor what is inside both adult and child.

The mentoring relationship between child and adult is the fundamental core at the heart of human life.
